Our thanks to Arab News for responding so strongly in its front-page editorial to the bombing of the Coptic Cathedral in Cairo (Dec. 12). The people killed were mainly women and children who were, as the article said, “in their sacred place of worship.”
It is to the credit of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Jordan and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) that they were quick to condemn the attack. What followed in the editorial was of great importance, saying those living in the Middle East “must actively do more to protect our Arab Christian brothers.” The editorial rightly states that Christian Arabs as a community have often given support to Arab and Muslim causes.
The article concluded with mention of the “crowds of Egyptian Muslim young men and women gathering in protest against attacking the church complex.” They set an example to be proud of. It is time now for peace-loving people, whether Muslim or Christian, to stand together and defeat the extremists who would destroy the region, its history and its people.
