ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa lauded the Army Elections Support Center (AESC) on Wednesday for their help to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), said a statement released by the military’s media wing.
The COAS was chairing the 212th Corps Commanders’ Conference at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. The forum also paid tribute to all those who were killed or injured in the four terror attacks before polling day.
The ECP had requested the deployment of 350,000 troops at various polling stations and printing presses across the country, almost a month before the polls. As per the appeal, the AESC ensured the deployment four days before polling day; two security officials were stationed inside and two outside in some 85,000 polling stations.
General Bajwa directed the military personnel to continue consolidating the gains made against terrorism and militancy, and reiterated the importance of the Afghanistan Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Stability (APAPPS).
He also expressed satisfaction about the progress of military-level engagements with Afghanistan for regional peace, especially through the APAPPS.
On July 23, a 28-member delegation visited Afghanistan to attend the inaugural session of the APAPPS. Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua, in her opening remarks to the media, said their presence in Kabul, with just two days left to Pakistan’s general elections “shows our commitment to APAPPS.”
APAPPS provides the two neighboring countries with a platform for dialogue on an institutional level, said the military spokesperson.
The forum comprises five working groups: Politico-diplomatic, military, intelligence, economic and trade, and refugee issues.
