ISLAMABAD: The UAE embassy in Islamabad is undertaking relief project for earthquake hit Mirpur district of Azad Kashmir, the embassy said Sunday night.

An integrated project for relief of earthquake effectees in Mirpur is jointly implemented by the UAE embassy and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Charitable and Humanitarian Est., the embassy tweeted.

“The Emirati Releif Project for effectees of earthquake that struck the district of Mirpur, includes distribution of Aid comprising basic and important needs of food, medical and shelter materials for more than 3,000 families,” Embassy said.

In September this year, a powerful 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit Azad Kashmir and other areas in the eastern Punjab province claiming at least 38 lives and injuring around 500.

A large number of homes and shops were badly damaged, if not flattened to the ground, in the affected areas.

The last major earthquake to hit Kashmir was in October 2005, which killed almost 80,000 people and left 3.5 million homeless.
