LONDON: Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani and his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty held official talks in Cairo on Sunday to discuss various aspects of bilateral cooperation.

Al-Shaibani and Abdelatty were joined by Syrian Minister of Economy and Industry Nidal Al-Shaar and Egyptian Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.

The discussions focused on enhancing economic and trade cooperation while also reviewing regional security issues. Al-Shaibani and Abdelatty discussed ways to strengthen relations between Syria and Egypt. The meeting is part of Syrian diplomatic efforts to enhance cooperation with Arab countries and promote shared interests, according to SANA.

It is Al-Shaibani’s first visit to Egypt since the fall of the Bashar Assad regime in December 2024. In late April, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held a brief side conversation with Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa during the Arab-European summit held in Cyprus.

Syrian officials have recovered the country’s relations with its neighbors and the international community following years of isolation under the Assad regime. They have emphasized investments, security cooperation, regional stability and engagement with international bodies.
