RIO DE JANEIRO: A news report is citing a lawmaker who estimates that the burst of two dams at an iron ore mine in central Brazil caused $2.6 billion to $3.7 billion in damages.
The Estado de S.Paulo daily on Tuesday cited Rep. Leonardo Quintao saying he based the estimate on assessments by parliamentary technical experts.
The Nov. 5 dam bursts at the Samarco iron ore mine in Minas Gerais state unleashed a massive wave of mud, debris and water that practically wiped out the nearby hamlet of Bento Rodrigues. The state fire department has attributed seven deaths to the disaster, with another four bodies awaiting identification and 12 still missing.
The mud has also contaminated a river that’s the source of water for residents of two states.
