JEDDAH: Heavy storms and winds hit Jazan on Friday, cutting electricity supply for more than 12 hours, uprooting lampposts and overturning billboards.
The storm was described as exceptional because of the over 200 km per hour winds, an official at the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) said.
The Saudi Electricity Company apologized to residents of Abu Arish for the long hours of outage. The company said technical teams began work to restore services, but the poor conditions affecting some areas stalled some maintenance work.
Despite the fact that operation teams are prepared to deal with power cuts under most severe conditions, the company said the heavy storm caused substantial damage to the grid. “Skilled and qualified emergency teams were able to address the problems gradually,” he said.
Teams are still receiving complaints about outages even after successfully restoring power in the area.
