Five creative youngsters have come out tops in the 2016 First Edition awards, a Community Jameel initiative in collaboration with the Jeddah Literary Cultural Club.
This year’s third staging of the awards attracted 270 entrants, 197 of them female. Winners in the five categories were announced at a ceremony in Jeddah on Dec. 19. They include:
• Novel: Fatima Salahaddin Alakeb Yusuf for her book ‘Alienated on the Borders of the Motherland’.
• Short Story: Sultan Atef Moussa Aleissa for his collection ‘A Good Conscience’.
• Poetry: Mohammed Omar Almo Al-Sheikh for his collection ‘Brightness from the Rubble’.
• Children’s literature: Fatima Al-Zahra Mokhtar Al-Saeed Al-Gheity for her fairytale book ‘Elephant’.
• Theatre: Zha Abdelrahman Sedeek Shabat for her play ‘One Face and Two Shadows’.
The winners will have their first editions published by the Jeddah Literary Cultural Club, as well as receive a trophy and SR 5,000 cash prize. Winners also become members of the First Edition Club, sponsored by the Jeddah Literary Cultural Club Jeddah.
Dr. Abdullah bin Oqail Al-Salmi, president of the Jeddah Literary Cultural Club, opened the ceremony and stressed the role of the First Edition award in honoring creative works of art, especially its importance for Saudi creative youth.
Hassan Jameel, president of Community Jameel’s local initiatives, welcomed and praised the reputation and credibility of the First Edition award as reflected in the standards applied by the jury of intellectuals, academics, and scientifically acclaimed creators in their fields — all recognized by fellow professionals for their competence and objectivity.
“The overarching objective of the First Edition award is to promote literary and scientific talents in Saudi Arabia and to bring out their very best,” he said.
“By reading, evaluating, and judging submissions and nominating outstanding entrants for special recognition, we can promote talent and give greater opportunity to writers.”
