The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) conducted a mock emergency test of an airplane that catches fire while landing at Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah.
All government agencies and the operator of the airport participated in the implementation of the mock emergency test, as well as a number of support service agencies, such as the Ministry of Health, Civil Defense, the Police and Traffic Department, with all these sectors contributing to the successful outcome of this mock exercise.
The mock emergency test stimulates a scenario where the control tower receives an emergency call from the captain of an arriving airplane with 70 passengers onboard, informing them that there is a fire in the kitchen and hence a request for an emergency landing.
As soon as the call was received, the airport went into an emergency status. All relevant agencies went into action; fire and rescue service and fire vehicles went on the tarmac on stage one emergency to help with the rescue operation and to put out the fire.
The mock operation was performed successfully and the team that participated in the operation managed to perform their functions efficiently and in accordance with safety procedures adopted internationally.
The passengers were evacuated and moved to a safe area at the airport, and the fire was put out.
In the mock emergency tests conducted on a regular basis, GACA assumes its responsible position of saving life and properties. These mock emergency tests are prepared with a realistic scenario to measure the interactions with such cases if they were to occur.
A new plot was added to the scenario this time, where several prisoners were onboard that plane; this is done to train the various security sectors in such situations in the event of their occurrence.
