Peru’s Ambassador to the Kingdom Carlos R. Zapata expressed hope on Wednesday that a major Peruvian firm’s participation in the Jeddah trade fair will jumpstart Saudi-Peru bilateral trade.
Danper Trujillo SAC, which is one of Peru’s biggest exporters of agro-industrial products, will participate in the Jeddah trade fair that will run from Nov. 21 to 24, Zapata told Arab News.
Zapata also invited Saudi tourists to visit Peru, which boasts of the Great Inca Trail, a vast network of Andean and coastal roads of about 40,000 km. Built by the ancient Peruvians, this has been declared as a UNESCO world heritage site.
Danper, the only Latin American firm to participate in the trade fair, engages in the production of preserved asparagus, red piquillo peppers and vegetables.
Its products include white and green asparagus, asparagus salads, string beans, papayas and mangoes in syrup or fruit juice, among others.
He said bilateral trade between the two countries amounts to just $100 million since diplomatic relations between the two countries started in 1986 and that Peru opened its embassy in the Saudi capital in 2012.
He noted that in the wake of the Peruvian Embassy’s establishment in the Saudi capital with Eduardo Martinetti as the first ambassador, the Kingdom followed suit by establishing its embassy in Lima in 2013.
The Peruvian envoy added that Muneer Binjabi was appointed as the Kingdom’s first ambassador in the South American country.
Zapata said he was hoping Danper’s participation in the Jeddah trade fair will jumpstart the bilateral ties between the two countries in the run up to the visit of a trade delegation to the Kingdom in 2017.
“We’re lining up a trade delegation to the Kingdom next year although we don’t know its composition yet. I still have to coordinate with Peruvian Trade Minister Eduardo Ferreyros regarding it,” Zapata said.
He added that there’s much room for improvement in the bilateral trade between Saudi Arabia and Peru but time and efforts on the part of the two countries to promote it are needed.
