RIYADH: A campaign for the early detection of breast cancer was launched recently at the King Fahd Security College (KFSC) in the eastern part of the Saudi capital.

The campaign — called Abdul Latif Center for Early Detection of Cancer (ALCEDC) — was launched in honor of the wife of Major General Turki Al-Khilaini, KFSC director general.

“Launching the event on that day was timely as the International Women’s Day was also being observed in various parts of the world,” an online report said.

The campaign highlighted various activities as well as a mobile medical clinic equipped with the latest devices to detect breast cancer in accordance with the highest international standards and clinical examination.

The clinic also showcased a mammogram, which is an X-ray that allows a qualified specialist to examine the breast tissue for any suspicious areas.

A workshop was also held on the occasion and featured educational lectures as well as the importance of early detection and prevention of cancer.

The workshop also discussed the testing process for the application of self-examination in addition to ALCEDC’s comprehensive services provided to all segments of society.

Ghada Khalifa Al- Amin, ALCEDC executive director, talked about the services provided by the mobile medical clinic such as medical screening for early detection of breast cancer and clinical examination services which were also rendered during the Janadriyah festival.

The high level of breast cancer awareness was also noted among women and young girls during the festival, during which 10,000 benefited.

Some 7,000 attended the workshops during the festival while 2,000 underwent primary medical tests and clinical examination.

The Saudi Cancer Society (SCS) also provides various services to as far as early detection of cancer is concerned.

“Its various services include psychosocial support and awareness and prevention,” an SCS volunteer said.
