Time is precious and we’re constantly on the move. But there seems to be one thing that tends to be forgotten, food! We are always eating late, we’re always promising ourselves to eat our salads by the end of the meal, drink our fresh juices later or order fast food because there’s just no time. There is simply no excuse to think fast food and neglect our health because there has been a boom of healthy food restaurants popping up in Jeddah for a couple of years now. You can find salads, smoothies, readymade food for delivery and so much more.

To name a few restaurants that cater to healthy eaters and those who are looking for healthier options, there’s Boga on Sultan St., a restaurant that serves salads, sandwiches and fresh juices. The menu is creative, mixing sweet and savory ingredients, which are mostly plant-based, and there’s popcorn on the go too. There’s The Shaker, a juice bar with highly nutritious shakes and smoothies, a number of protein milk shakes for post workout drinks and a couple of extra indulgent shakes for anyone looking for an extra chocolaty sweet kick that includes Oreos, yum! The Shaker’s menu provides a wide range of fruits and some vegetables that you can either create or order from the set mixed options. It’s a quick nutritious fix in the mid day, after work or a quick pick me up while running errands. Other options include the Fire Grill, Piatto and Shobak, lots of fresh ingredients and made the way you’d like it to be. The Fire Grill is a Mexican restaurant with the classical burritos, fajitas, fresh guacamole and Mexican infused salads. There are fresh ingredients for the customers to choose from near the counter where they can create their own salads and add condiments to their meals. The ingredients are fresh, tasty and full of flavor perfect for the hunger stricken human.

There are many more restaurants and cafes that provide healthy meals. Sushi is also a major favorite for those on the run. Chez sushi provides the healthier option for all sushis, with brown rice instead of regular white and a great variety of salads such as the Seared Tuna salad, the fresh cut tuna is amazing, calamari salad with its tangy ginger dressing and of course you have the option to create your own sushi platters. For the sushi lovers out there you can also find Wakame Lounge (check out the Alaskan Maki and Crispy California Club), Gold Sushi Club (try their crab salad and Kani salad), Shogun (try their volcano maki and lava rolls) and enjoy.

Who said salads have to be boring? You can always create your own concoction right from home and there’s nothing better than freshly made salads to go straight from home. Mix and match, be creative and diversify your choice of flavor according to your preferences and moods. You can never go wrong with freshly made salads, take some time off and test out your dressings and find your favorite, store it properly and enjoy them with a colorful bowl of goodness. Smoothies are also best made right at home and the best way to preserve your favorite products are by freezing. You can freeze berries, bananas, spinach, pineapples … you name it! Add a splash of colorful pomegranate seeds, delicious mango or watermelon, honey, agave syrup, ginger, mint leaves, passion fruit, almond milk or rice milk and just about anything you’re in the mood for. You can store these ingredients in zip lock bags and pop them in the blender whenever you want, the ice adds a water base to the smoothie or you can just use crushed ice if you’d like. Here are some recipes that can accommodate your taste buds.

The Sunshine Smoothie

This smoothie serves as a great breakfast drink, snack or immune boosting drink.

Ingredients:

1 cup Greek yogurt

3/4 cup ice cubes

5 dates

1/2 cup orange juice

5 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice (please don’t use concentrate)

3 tbsp. honey

2 tsp. freshly ground ginger

Handful of pineapple chunks

Method:

Mix all the ingredients together and pour into a sift before pouring into glass to keep chunks out.

Another favorite smoothie of mine includes a peculiar ingredient yet you can hardly taste it — chia seeds, a great source of calcium and antioxidants.

Berry and Chia Seeds Smoothie

If you know you’re going to have a long and hectic day, keep this smoothie on the side for your break whenever you feel you need a pick me up.

1 cup strawberries

1 cup blueberries

1 cup rasberries

1 banana

1 cup Greek yogurt or almond milk

2 tbsp honey

2 tbsp chia seeds

1 cup ice

Method:

Add all the ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth, the smoothie can be very thick so adjust the ice accordingly.

Kick the ugly habit of eating fast food meals and opt for healthier options, it’s never too late to start.
