Last week, I was discussing the effects of vaccines. We all know that vaccines did their share in curtailing and containing the spread of viruses (polio, diphtheria, whooping cough…), which claimed many children’s lives at one time when living conditions were suboptimal (poor hygiene and nourishment, contaminated waters…). But we have to also recognize the double-edge of the vaccine sword, which could sometimes leave permanent injurious side effects or even cause fatalities in children. We have to remember that in the US and Saudi Arabia, certain types of vaccines are mandatory for babies.

In Part 18, I wrote about the March 5, 2015 court ruling that compensated families of 117 children for injuries and even deaths only in between Nov. 16, 2014 and Feb. 15, 2015. The US government had allocated a fund of 3.5 billions dollars for such compensations, called the National Vaccine Compensation Program (NVCP). Since Congress has exonerated and relieved the vaccine industry from compensations, the burden of settlements fell on the NVCP fund instead.

The report of the Department of Justice (DOJ) of March 5, 2015, as I mentioned earlier does not represent all of the vaccine injuries and fatalities actually occurring in children in the US. The 117 settlements mentioned-above correspond only to a fraction of the total current legal cases going on now and the ones, which have not been reported yet, due to the unawareness of most Americans of the Federal Vaccine Court (FVC) and NVCP fund. Many vaccine-injury cases remain unreported or even undiagnosed. Despite the existence of the FVC, fighting a legal case can extend to years in order to receive settlements for vaccine injuries and deaths from the current $3.5 billion of the Vaccine Injury Compensation Trust Fund (VICTF). If the fund settles all the cases, the $3.5 billion will not be sufficient to cover all the legal cases that have not been claimed yet. The other dilemma for parents is that court cases could stretch to long years before the VICTF settles indemnities.

The process takes a very long time. It will be a different story if there had been an honest broker like the medical community putting enough effort and interest in the vaccine issue and governments awarding enough money to universities, laboratories, researchers, and scientists to produce independent research on vaccines.

Most vaccine research relies on funds granted by the pharmaceutical industry or done in their own labs, thus resulting in one-sided research. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) spends billions of dollars every year to buy overpriced patented vaccines from the industry, when they should finance independent research instead, to get objective findings that also lead to less costly vaccines.

Just for information, vaccines are made of attenuated viruses, part of viruses, or heat-killed microorganisms, preservatives, and other harmful substances that should be questioned and addressed, especially when it concerns very young and immune-compromised children and adults. The main concern of medicine and government agencies should be to wipe out infectious diseases, illnesses, and viruses while maintaining the good health, wellbeing, and safety of children and people and not to leave this responsibility to an industry, which is mostly interested in making “big” profits.

Parents in the US have become proactive, trying to change legislations. Many of them across America are campaigning to have a choice in their children’s vaccinations, whether for medical, religious, or personal reasons. Vaccines have their risks, but they could also save lives. They should be approached carefully by the treating pediatrician. They should not be given immediately to newborns, unless they are in the eye of the storm of an epidemic. Multiple vaccines should not be given in one appointment at a very early age. They should be spaced out. Some should be deferred to a later age or not given at all like the flu shot and the Rotavirus vaccine when the infant is breastfed and raised in a hygienic environment.

On another front, I advise parents to become more informed about seemingly innocuous baby bath and baby care products and women’s shampoos and body washes, which have recently been found to contain harmful chemicals, especially the ones, which are petroleum-based (1,4 Dioxane and others). Some of them could cause cancer, according to the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and some are definite carcinogens (1,4 Dioxane...) as per the National Toxicology Program (NTP) standards. Not only that, they also appear to cause birth defects through the contamination of mothers.

Unfortunately, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not require manufacturers to list untested chemicals (preservatives, colorings, flavors…) on labels of products. Chemicals should get tested and approved as safe and should not be left to manufacturers to add toxic chemicals in food, drink, drug, and skin care products and cosmetics without restriction. Research should not be financed or left in the hands of the pharmaceutical industry, regardless of its objectivity. An independent body should do that.

It is regrettable that restrictions are imposed on certain licensing and trivial matters, whereas contaminants and carcinogens are left unregulated, especially when it concerns children’s products such as Hello Kitty Bubble Bath, Huggies Baby Wash, Johnson’s Baby Wash, Scooby-Doo Bubble bath, Sesame Street Bubble Bath, Olay Complete Baby Wash, Clairol Herbal Essence Shampoo, and more products, which we the consumers are unaware of.

Aren’t you wondering why mental disorders, chronic diseases, and behavioral and learning disabilities are on the rise in innocent children who will never be normal healthy adults?

Look in what state we are, suffering from the dengue fever, hepatitis B, corona virus (MERS), asthma, antibiotic resistance, cancers, and more. What is causing all that? Are these health problems caused by the lack of sewage systems (the infamous Misk Lake!); the smoke produced by the desalination plant, polluting northern Jeddah skies; or Petromine oil refinery toxic odors in southern Jeddah residential areas, suffocating residents?

To add insult to injury, we enjoy industrial waste; car exhaust fumes; and sewage dumping in the suburbs of the city and in the Red Sea, polluting the waters, fish, and agricultural produce and endangering fauna, flora, and marine life. Our city, waters, air, and soil are contaminated beyond hope, maiming children, inviting epidemics and diseases, and filling hospitals beyond their capacities. Where are we heading? When are we going to wake up? The optimistic side of me hopes that it is not too late to reverse all these toxic burdens.

Children’s bodies are tiny and their systems undeveloped, making them more susceptible to illnesses, infectious diseases, chronic disorders, and permanent disabilities, which make the prospect of good health very grim. They live the rest of their lives with mental and learning disabilities as well as physical infirmities and emotional scars. They become a load on their aging parents, physically, emotionally, and financially or become a burden on society. Some of them, unfortunately, don’t even live long enough to become adults.

To show care and love to your children, you should become extra vigilant (without paranoia), report possible contaminations, and have your children tested for toxicity, before it causes major health damage, disability, or fatality.

To end this series of articles, I would like to add that we as parents, mothers, fathers, people around children should become very informed, wary, and attentive to what children eat, drink, wear, play with, what medicine (antibiotics…) or vaccines they take, and what is put into their mouths and bodies. Don’t trust anyone blindly. Question everything your child is given. Become smart proactive caring loving parents.

Before I close this subject, I would like to thank all my readers, including the international ones who took the time to express their appreciation through e-mails for these articles. I am pleased that people are aware of what is happening. I must admit I have also become more informed on this subject! We are all in this struggle together! Together we will make the difference on this earth, which is left in our trust.
