Last week, I discussed the dangers of fluoride in our drinking water and appealed to the Saudi Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) to stop adding it to our bottled drinking water. We are entitled to have a choice in our health! Infants’ and children’s bodies should not be burdened with fluoride or any other contaminant.
My topic today is about misusing and abusing drugs.
Many people are under the impression that drugs and especially antibiotics are harmless as long as they are prescribed by a medical doctor. Some believe that because drugs treat diseases, then they should be good for us in big doses. I do not deny they are necessary AT TIMES, but frequent and long-term use of drugs can be damaging to the health of infants, children, and adults, unless the condition requires them urgently. Abuse of any kind of drug or medication damages health! Let us see how.
Medical drugs like antibiotics, penicillin, and others of the same family frequently prescribed and in extended periods can be toxic to children’s organs and systems. This series of drugs wipe out the intestinal microflora, the “beneficial” gut bacteria, which protect humans from pathogens, viruses, and contagious and yeast infections (Candida). The protective microflora are our first line of defense. When they are healthy they can protect even against cancer. Frequent antibiotic prescriptions to children (and adults) destroy their “healthy” bacteria, which leave them with depleted immunity and makes the body resistant to antibiotic effects.
The word antibiotic means “against life.” They kill “good” and “bad” bacteria, leaving the body defenseless. When the immune system is weakened by antibiotics and chemicals, the body becomes susceptible to viruses, bacteria, infectious diseases, yeast infections, allergies, asthma, autoimmune disorders, and cancer. Certain powerful antibiotics can even damage the kidneys by shutting them down. Antibiotics should be taken only when they are very necessary and according to the prescription.
After a course of antibiotics, it is important to take a course of probiotics, meaning “for life,” to replenish the wiped out “healthy” bacteria. It is also necessary to take “live culture” yogurt or kefir (fermented milk by Tibetan mushrooms). A diet rich in leafy greens and vegetables is required plus a course of multivitamins to supplement destroyed nutrients by antibiotics. Simple sugars, fast and processed foods, trans fats, and fries should be avoided too, as they weaken the defenses. Eating healthy nutrient-rich foods (fresh leafy greens and other vegetables and fruits) restores a healthy immune system.
Antibiotics are misused and given to the animals we eat as well. They are fed to chicken and cattle to beef them up and make them fat and commercially profitable. Let alone the supplementary courses they are given to treat or prevent infections when they are raised in unhygienic conditions (tens of chicken are piled and constricted in tight cages). In both cases, a load of antibiotics, “concealed” and unspoken of, reach the tiny defenseless bodies of your children and mine.
The good news for the American consumer is that most American meat and chicken companies have stopped giving antibiotics to their animals and birds to fatten them. The positive action came in response to concerns and protests from consumers and health advocates against antibiotics and poisonous chemicals, which have been causing grave health complications.
A very serious problem is occurring recently all over the world, in the Middle East in particular. Hospitals and patients are facing antibiotic resistance! What is antibiotic resistance? It is a complicated issue where the body stops responding to antibiotics, no matter how powerful they are. So doctors, in desperation, prescribe several broad-spectrum antibiotics at the same time, in the hope that they work. Our bodies have become saturated with the drug, turning acidic by the use of multiple drugs. Acidic conditions mean that acidity in the body overpowers alkalinity, knocking the pH balance in the body and depleting the “healthy bacteria” and important nutrients as well as compromising the immune system. The condition leaves the body defenseless, unable to heal itself.
According to a report from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, “More than two million Americans a year develop infections resistant to antibiotics, which kill at least 23,000 annually.”
To combat antibiotic resistance, the patient should be given high doses of multi-vitamins and-minerals, especially selenium in order to make the body more responsive to the antibiotic prescribed. A healthy nutrition is important along with the recommendations mentioned above.
According to Al Sears, MD, Pakistani scientists (Abdul Hannan et al.) found the oil of the seeds of Nigella sativa (Habbah Sawdah or Habbah Al-Barakah in Arabic) to be effective against several strains of methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a deadly infection, spreading in hospitals and nursing homes. Black seed oil seems to deter the spreading of the superbug MRSA and decrease antibiotic resistance. In other studies, the oil showed effectiveness against “97 different superbugs” resistant to Amoxicillin and Tetracycline.
Sears also found the oil of Nigella sativa to relieve pain, allergies, and eczema. He says: “It improves circulation and varicose veins… [and has] many other health benefits.” Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, suggested the seed as a remedy for most ailments except death.
Not only antibiotics, vaccines (mercury), and hormones are part of the meat and chicken we eat, the dangerous toxin and carcinogen, arsenic, is also added to the chicken feed, Roxarsone, made by a drug company, subsidiary of Pfizer, for last sixty years. The American Food Drug Administration (FDA) made no objection to its inclusion. Arsenic is detected in chicken faeces. After much pressure from consumers, the drug company decided to remove arsenic from the chicken feed sold in the American markets.
However, the company does not feel the need to remove it from the chicken feed going for export outside the US. Does that mean that other countries are “negligent” enough to accept the toxic product to be fed to the chicken their citizens eat. And do we have to accept to eat chicken and meat, which are fed antibiotics, hormones, and arsenic? Are we not human beings like the American consumer?
All I can say is that I put my trust in God and hope that the Saudi FDA and the Ministry of Agriculture realize that we are being duped by manufacturers and reject chemically contaminated chicken and meat as well as their toxic feed in order to save the health of children and the public at large. Such moves should be announced and condemned publically to reassure the consumer that the Saudi agencies are defending the interest of the citizen and not the interest of the meat and chicken industries.
Of course, antibiotic-and arsenic-free meat and chicken are more expensive than commercial meat, but people have become much more aware and are willing to pay the difference in cost to have a safer diet. The American FDA has distanced itself from this issue, leaving the decision to be a voluntary choice by the industry. Let us hope that the Saudi FDA and Ministry of Agriculture voice their concerns in favor of banning antibiotics, hormones, arsenic, and other toxins that fatten animals and birds. Failing to do so will only give the perception of a complacent partnership with the food and drug companies.
Our children are drowning in a pool of chemicals that compromise their immune systems, disrupt their hormonal balance, trigger autoimmune disorders, and cause cancer. If we do not act now, tomorrow may be too late.
