In my last several articles, I was writing about scientist and Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski, one of the leading doctors who practice alternative and integrative medicine successfully for over 50 years in the US after he left Poland because of the harshness of the regime. In her book Knockout, Suzanne Somers interviews several of the leading cancer healing doctors/scientists who are not much publicized in the medical community because of their unconventional cancer healing methods. Many a sometimes, their therapies are even more successful than conventional cancer protocols (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery), plus they come without the ravaging side effects. Such doctors have put into remissions terminal stage IV cancers (brain, liver, pancreas, lung, breast…).

Burzynski uses peptides to treat stubborn cancers. He also applies gene-targeting therapy to activate the patient’s silent cancer fighting genes. He found significant success with this method. His cured patients testified for him when he was about to be indicted and get locked up. They went to great extents of suspending their work, sacrificing their paychecks, and traveling long distances to march, protest the verdict, and testify for the healer. They also remained in Houston until his acquittal.

Today, I shall tackle another heroic oncologist. Somer did an interview with a passionate giant in healing cancer naturally and in a non-toxic manner. Unfortunately after writing about him extensively, I discovered that he suddenly died without warning of a heart attack despite being healthy and energetic and having no medical history (his death is being investigated). Though he is not with us anymore to help cancer patients, I shall still write about him, his method, his fascinating work, and sacrifices. This write-up is in homage of the memory of this persistent and dedicated scientist and oncologist. He will be greatly missed by his cancer patients and others who are desperately in need of his effective therapy.

It is about the late brave Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez. He graduated from Brown University, MA, with Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude and continued pre-med at Columbia University, New York. It was in Cornell Medical College that he made his M.D. and was named a Teagle Scholar. He received many “honors for [his] performance in internal medicine and research in cancer immunology.” Among his other recognitions, he was given the Ernst L. Wynder Award from the Center for Mind-Body Medicine. Dr. Wynder was the first scientist to confirm the association between cigarette smoking and cancer.

As a second-year medical student, Gonzalez met Dr. Donald Kelly, a dentist, who “developed a very intensive program for treating advanced cancer with great success utilizing pancreatic enzymes and nutritional approaches” during the 60’s and 70’s. Dr. Robert Good, the president of Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center at the time, happened to be the research mentor of Gonzalez. When he saw the young man’s dedication and progress in cancer treatment, Good encouraged the young medical student to view Dr. Kelley’s patient charts to learn more about his work and method. He did deep research and investigation on Kelley’s five-year work, diagnoses and therapies. The records contained thousands of cases of Kelley’s successes as well as failures. Most of Kelley’s cancer patients were alive and in “good health” five and fifteen years later. Speaking to the survivors made Gonzalez realize that this doctor’s therapy was effective on cancer. He found that “his results are impressive” and his patients’ testimonials are even more; hence Gonzalez decided to follow Kelley’s track and applied his protocol in treating cancer with enzymes and natural approaches.

Unfortunately, the successes of natural therapies rarely make the headlines, whereas pharmaceutical drugs make front-page splash and cause a stir in the news all the time. Natural and un-patentable therapies usually fade in the background and remain in the dark, but a few persistent scientists like Burzynski and Gonzalez refuse to be silenced.

Another fact is that billions of dollars are made by the drug industry and special interest groups with chemotherapy, yet natural and alternative therapies barely make money for the treating doctors and of course not enough to fund research.

Adding to that, the dogmatic attitude of mainstream medicine and oncologists keeps them away from considering natural therapies; hence very few include natural remedies in their treating process to help cancer patients heal faster and reduce the side effects of conventional cancer protocols (chemotherapy).

Somers asked Dr. Gonzalez the reasons that led him to become an immunology fellow and made him follow Dr. Kelley’s work. His answer was that Dr. Robert Good, the president of Sloan-Kettering at that time, encouraged him to do so. He continued saying that when he tried to “put the findings [of Kelley] together in a monograph in 1986, no one would publish it.” Doctors and scientists alike rejected the concept of cancer getting treated with “a crazy nutritional program.” Despite the rejection, his passion and deep belief in the paper did not stop his research there. He “turned down a job at Sloan-Kettering and opened up a practice in order to apply the natural therapy.” He was so confident of his work and therapy that he thought he would be funded for his research on Kelley’s therapy. But, reality turned out to be different.

Gonzalez explains to Somers that “Kelley’s program had three basic components: first an individualized diet.” “There are ten basic diets ranging from pure vegetarian nuts and seeds to an Atkins-type-red-meat diet and about ninety variations of the basic diets. But the main anticancer elements were the large doses of pancreatic enzymes. We know they serve a digestive function that is how we break down our food. But 107 years ago, Dr. Beard, the Scottish embryologist, said that pancreatic enzymes are also our body’s main defense against cancer.” Because Beard was ahead of his time, “People thought it was insane [and] he died in obscurity, angry, and bitter.” Fortunately for cancer patients, Kelley revived Beard’s enzyme therapy and applied it successfully. Gonzalez decided to follow the same road.

Gonzalez explains that his cancer treatment program starts with an individualized diet, supplements that consists of a “large dose of enzymes,” and a detoxification plan of coffee enemas, juice fasts, liver flushes, and more. He explains that he has been using coffee enemas for the past 28 years, since he met Kelly in medical school, while he was “living on pizzas and junk food.”

He continues that while chemotherapy can reach $50,000 to $70,000 and radiation $25,000, his entire therapy costs around $12,000, including doctor’s fees and evaluation. Because natural therapies (enzymes) cannot be patented, they do not make big profits like patentable pharmaceutical drugs. Gonzalez adds that chemotherapy alone without radiation is a $100 billion business. With doctors’ and hospital fees, it hikes to $200 billion. He adds that the drug industry would like to see him out of the way. He knows that he and his likes are a threat to their money-making machine, the cause of the resistance from Big Pharma and mainstream medicine, supported by government health agencies and institutions.

Next week, I shall continue with the interview with Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez that reveals to us the many benefits and different aspects of the method he adopted from Dr. Kelley’s therapy, which has worked for thousands of cancer patients. His absence robs us of his exceptional healing technique. Hopefully, his colleagues at the clinic carry the flag after him.
