Gender roles

This is with reference to the report “80 women likely to enter fray” (June 10). The report is about women participating in Dammam municipal elections. I think that we should not follow the West in each and every aspect. I do believe that women should be allowed to showcase their talents in every sphere of life but so-called rights activists should not try to transform women into men. Men and women have separate roles. They actually complement each other. A man cannot perform certain tasks that a woman finds very easy and vice versa. A workingwoman can easily juggle her career with raising children and taking care of various domestic chores whereas, men (may be not all) find it difficult to make a cup of tea after spending eight hours in the office.

This is something very natural. We should respect the womenfolk for this. Unfortunately, the West in the name of feminism or women’s right is trying to disturb the intricate balance that is very necessary for a healthy society.

Raising children is a full-time job. I fail to understand as to why this important thing has been demeaned. This is such a huge task that alone should guarantee respect to a woman. I do believe that women don’t get the respect they deserve in many households or societies. Instead of addressing this core issue, rights activists are hell bent on changing the natural gender roles. — Lala, Jeddah
