I read with interest the article “Turkey’s politics of peace” (June 17) by Carl Bildt. I believe that Turkey is going through a very delicate phase. The Turkish people have strongly reacted to some policies of their president. They should tread this path very carefully and should not forget the contributions of the Justice and Development Party or AK party under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
I think they should give the AK party another chance. It has the experience and expertise required to steer the country out of the current situation. The other available options are not reliable. Instead of moving ahead, parties other than the AK party would only try to undo what Erdogan has done just because he and his party are considered Islamist.
I urge President Erdogan to mend his ways and try not to overreact over petty issues. Such actions only work against him and his party. We should not forget that prior to the rule of the AK party, Turkey was faced with stagflation and there were many other issues haunting the country and its people. Erdogan and party changed the situation and transformed Turkey into an economic power. This service is far greater than the so-called secular credentials of the country. Insistence on secularism will harm Turkey. I believe that the current liberal approach is doing well for the country. — Tariq Jameel, Jubail
