The Filipino, Mckornick Rabina, who was found semi-comatose in the desert recently is recovering, according to an embassy official who said he can now talk to doctors and nurses as well as visitors at the hospital in the Saudi capital where he was admitted.
“Rabina is now out of danger and his family and friends are happy about it. The Philippine Embassy has been monitoring his condition and coordinating with his employer regarding his case,” an embassy official said.
He added that an embassy official also visits Rabina at the hospital regularly where he has been admitted since he was found in the desert by the authorities.
The improvement in Rabina’s medical condition has also been posted on social media like Facebook. He was earlier reported to have been “beaten up and raped.” He also sustained serious head injuries and suffered multiple bone fractures.
Cecilia Jamila, Rabina’s friend said that while the victim was still having difficulties in speaking and moving, he was able to scribble words that would help identify his attackers, according to a report.
Rabina’s case has drawn the ire and sympathy of Filipinos in the Kingdom and abroad. Jean Wooden, a Filipino businesswoman in Perth, Australia, called his brother in Riyadh regarding Rabina’s case.
“She first asked me if the incident was true. When I said ‘yes’, she expressed anger and dismay and said that she hoped Rabina would get justice,” said Wooden’s brother, a well-known Filipino community leader.
People of different nationalities have reacted on Rabina’s case online. Shamim A. Hassan, a doctor posted, “I hope that the criminal will not be labeled as having psychological problems. Justice must be served.”
Rabina, who works for an ice cream company, hails from Bukidnon in southern Philippines.
