JEDDAH: The 1st Indomie PBL-JOB Invitational Basketball Tournament kicked off last Friday with a simple opening ceremony at Saudi Champion Academy (SCA) gymnasium at Television Street, Gulil District on the outskirts of Jeddah.
Assistant Labor Attache Rosario S. Mangahas of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Jeddah was the chief guest in the event inaugural. The other VIP guests that attended the opening day were Mohamed Bayoumi, friend of the Filipino community and recipient of the Presidential Banaag Award; Filsama’s Teng Laguialam, Subhan Afzal, marketing admininistrator Pinehill Arabia Food Limited (PAFL); Sameh Al-Torky, KSA operations manager, DT Sports/AND1; and Wilson of Sky Freight Forwarders.
Master Nestor Cuizon Sulliva, PBL-JOB founder/chairman of Pinoy Basketball League-Jeddah Overseas Basketbolista, emceed the affair and delivered the welcome address. Co-Founder/Commissioner Jon De Leon Azupardo did the games play-by-play commentary.
PAFL, distributor of Indomie noodles in the Kingdom, is the tournament’s title-sponsor. The co-sponsors include DT Sports (AND1), Sky Freight Forwarders, ABS-CBN The Filipino Channel (TFC), Bayoumi, Graal’s Beauty Care Saloon, Nica’s Boutique, Nesty’s Cafeteria, LS Wear and Nanay Baby’s Eatery.
With Sulliva and Azuardo in the organizing committee are Ana Tamesis Azupardo, sec-gen treasurer; Janah Alyssa Tamesis Azupardo, Athan Jared Tamesis Azupardo, Madamme Elizabeth De Leon Azupardo, Rolando Venterez, Jay Sipat, Eric Bautista and Joemar San Jose.
Industrial Referees Officiating Group (IROG) referees Abril Mabarit, Ancet Lerio, Andy Batalon with the support of the IROG Chairman Dick Cruz and assisted by Ernie Adao, will handle the officiating for the three-month event.
An exhibition match between Junzel and Jamjoom Pharma preceded the official opening game. Junzel won 73-65. The AND1 Best Player of the game was Valentine Calos of Junzel.
Universal Motor Agencies (UMA) defeated Conquerors 111-98 in the lone game to open the tournament.
In a fine start, UMA executed well in the game using timely passes, brilliant assists and rebounds to get the better of Conquerers.
The UMA trio of Sipat, San Jose and Malubay combined for 42 points. Adjudged AND1 Best Player of the game was UMA’s Dellwin Pulgado who scored 30 points. Rexel Borlas of Conquerors received a gift certificate from Sky Freight.
The Best Team in Uniform awardees were Jamjoom Pharma and Neproplast (Inter-Company Division) and Junzel (5’10 & below Division).
