HYDERABAD, 29 January 2005 — The Andhra Pradesh government yesterday handed over the case pertaining to the killing of Telugu Desam MLA Paritala Ravi to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Speaking to the media yesterday evening, Director General of Police Swaranjit Sen said a notification was issued in this regard. “The CBI will be taking over the investigation as soon as possible. In the meantime, the district police and the Crime Branch (CID) will carry out their investigations because the process of investigation is a continuous one. Four special police parties are already on the job. I urge the CBI to take up the case as early as possible. The state police will extend all help whenever required by them,” he said.

The DGP said that the murder case has been booked under 10 sections of the IPC, including section 302, against the 10 persons named in the FIR, including six unidentified assailants and four others: Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy (the son of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy), Gangula Suryanarayana Reddy alias Suri, Suri’s wife Gangula Bhanumathi and a local leader T. Konda Reddy.

Sen refuted reports that the names of Panchayat Raj Minister J.C. Diwakar Reddy and Inspector-General of Police (Rayalaseema) R.P. Meena were removed from the FIR. “An idea has been floated that some names have been removed. It is not possible to include or remove names. That can be done only after investigation. The person who had given the complaint (D. Kondanna) said that his son-in-law used to say that Diwakar Reddy and Meena were conspiring to kill him. But these names were not directly referred to in the complaint,” he clarified.
