This refers to the report “Grand mufti: Focus on Haj.” (Sept. 12)
The grand mufti is a learned scholar of Islam. His views about several issues in the world concerning Muslims and Islam have echoed Muslim sentiments, in general.
On Iran in particular, he has been quite aggressive, but true to a large extent. I may not agree with his recent remark about Iran, citing history to claim that Iranians are not Muslims, but indeed the Iranian government takes a line, quite contrary to the spirit of Islam. Politicizing of Islamic institutions including Haj is not acceptable, even to many Shiites outside Iran.
And if the Saudi government opposes this, it is in every respect its right to do so. Because it concerns the security of Hajis for which the Saudi authorities do everything to manage the Haj affairs peacefully.
Allah has commanded Muslims to believe in Allah, the Judgment Day, do the good and avoid evil on earth. — Mazharuddin, By e-mail
