The fasting month of Ramadan has just ended. The month had special flavor and blessings not only for the people of the Kingdom but for other Muslim countries and communities as well. During the holy month, you could see many new things. You could see people competing with each other to do good deeds because Allah has promised multiple rewards for any good deed done in Ramadan. You could also see some people become aggressive due to their bad habits — like smoking, because they were forced to quit smoking during the day.
These people not only make their own lives miserable by their attitude but also bother others around them. This is not the goal behind the divine order of fasting for Muslims. The goal is to make the fasting person more patient, tolerant and doer of good deeds. But if such people are unable to control their behavior then what's the benefit of fasting. They shouldn't go out to the street to harm and bother others physically and morally.
Although we see some people with such behaviors, there are others who present a very beautiful side of our religion. There are individuals and organizations that compete with each other to do as much good as possible. Charities and groups help a lot of people during Ramadan. These organizations avail themselves of this opportunity to help the needy and the poor. They don't do so to show off but with the true spirit and mission of Islam.
One of these organizations is SABIC (Saudi Arabia Basic Industries Corporation). Undoubtedly, this organization has done a lot for the service of the local community. During the month of Ramadan, its charitable activities become more remarkable. This year, SABIC hosted members of the Persons with Disabilities Association (Harakia), an organization which works to serve people with special needs and provides them with necessary skills.
Over 500 people with special needs and their families were hosted by SABIC's vice chairman for technology and innovation Eng. Awadh Al-Maker and director of the social responsibility Ya'rub Abdullah Al-Thunayyan. Harakia President Nasser bin Mohammad Al-Muwawa, supporter and patron of the association was also present.
Such an event is normal and can take place anywhere. But what makes it important is that it aims, in the first place, to build a partnership between the private sector and charitable organizations that look after the welfare of their members. The building of this partnership is a good omen and an indicator of the growing intellectual level of any society.
There are many charity organizations in the Kingdom under different names but Harakia is the ideal choice for the private sector to invest in because, not only it looks after people with special needs, it is in fact a model that other associations should follow for serving their members through long strategic planning.
In fact it was a memorable recreational event during which gifts and awards were distributed among the participants. By all means, it was a marvelous Ramadan night where everybody was smiling and happy and we hope to see other private sector organizations sponsor many similar events in days other than Ramadan.
