How far into the woods do you go before you start going out of them? No one has ever given an answer. And why is the fate of the 620 dead in Gaza like the tree that falls in the forest and because no one wants to hear it the world behaves it did not happen. No one has given an answer.
Last week, the death toll was 70. Now, it has spiralled in a crimson spurt to hover at the 600 mark and there is no cutoff figure so we can expect it to cross 1000 in the next assault on the innocent.
We don’t know who is keeping count but there is a very real fear that the official numbers exclude those who are missing or buried under rubble. The number could be much higher.
Truth be told, there is a tangible fear that the Israeli onslaught has no stoppage and this juggernaut has a longterm plan for which there is tacit acceptable globally. No one is actually stopping them from taking over huge swathes of land and occupying them. As Palestinians get pushed and painted into a corner by the bigger gun, the question that no one asks is:when will they leave?
And what do they intend to accomplish before they leave, if they leave at all. One fact is crystal clear. They are not going to leave. There is a marked difference in the texture of the Israeli offensive this time. They intend to wipe out the Hamas strongholds even if the cost is a barren land. That barren land is going to become a cordon sanitaire if they manage to complete their strategy. The idea also is to destroy all the firepower in the hands of the Hamas. Guns are rods without ammunition.
And even if there is the charade of negotiations and peace talks it will a very long time before the West Bank and Gaza will recover…if it recovers at all.
And in the conflict every Hamas rocket becomes a tacit approval to turn the screw. The one that fell on Ben Gurion airport and sparked a stand off by major airlines especially in the wake of the MH 17 disaster offers Israel another impetus to go for it, so to speak.
Currently the death rate is about 60 to 80 people a day. Give it a week and it becomes another 500. Give it a month and we move to 2000.
Do the math. Who will be left.
