Throughout the centuries, cultures from all over the world have harvested the health benefits of broths knowing that the essence and vitality of the animal were held within the bone.

“Good broth will raise the dead” so goes a South American proverb. I am sipping on a hot cup of resurrection as you read this, and its savory aromas are gently drifting into the air, whispering of spices and vitality. For the past seven months, I have been drinking bone broth up to three times a day, and it is truly a delicious elixir of life. But wait, I am getting ahead of myself, so let us go back seven months before my love affair with broth began.

Every morning started the same. A mad rush to get ready for work, followed by breakfast, which usually started with a cup of black coffee on an empty stomach. I had been battling ongoing stomach aches, bacterial infections and other ailments for over six years, but I usually kept these issues at bay with antibiotics and frequent visits to the doctor. Soon however, it began affecting my quality of life, relationships with my loved ones and work. I always felt tired, anxious and foggy headed and soon, I was not even able to eat much for fear of pain or further illness. It was a hollow life without any flavor and so I decided enough was enough, and began my journey toward healing and nourishment.

I spent seven months in Austin, Texas learning, healing and building myself back together at a holistic healing clinic, and it was there that I was introduced to the magic that is bone broth, and the delicate balance between gut health and mental health. One of the most enriching pieces of knowledge that I brought back with me home was bone broth.

Bone broth has become a major staple in my life, and I have persistently passed the knowledge on to friends and family suffering from intestinal issues such as IBS and Crohnes diseases, and even to a beloved family member following surgery. It is easy for the body to absorb and carries within its delicious soupy secrets a spectrum of minerals ranging from magnesium, calcium, potassium, sulfur, silicon and phosphorus. It is rich in amino acids (glycine and proline), and is highly beneficial in reducing inflammation, arthritis and joint pain since it contains trace amounts of chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine.

As you cook the bones of the animal, collagen, a protein found in the connective tissues of the vertebrate begins to break the collagen down, which in turn creates gelatin. Ladies, looking for bright youthful skin and gorgeous hair and strong nails? Bone broth is the right thing for you then.

When broth cools, the gelatin coagulates and is responsible for turning the broth “jiggly.” This vital compound of bone broth is at the epicenter of the soup’s power.

The use of gelatin dates back to ancient China and has made its way through history. One of the most famous uses was by the French who discovered that the most efficient way to feed their armies and homeless was with the nutrient dense power of bone broth. During the siege of Paris in in 1870, when food was scarce, broth and gelatin bouillons helped many Parisians survive and maintained their good health thanks to the dense nutrient rich soups.

It is not solely used for gut health. It aids in muscle repair, it helps balance and strengthen the body’s nervous system, it can help overcome food allergies and intolerances, it is greatly beneficial to those suffering from auto-immune disorders, and improves respiratory health. Think about the last time you were sick with a cold or the flu, and had a fresh bowl of chicken soup. Our mothers, and their mothers before them knew best, and clearly saw the healing components of broth.

Throughout the centuries, cultures from all over the world have harvested the health benefits of broths knowing that the essence and vitality of the animal were held within the bone. The delicious presence is still tasted in many types of cuisine across the globe. I look back seven months ago and humbly think about how miserable I was before I took the time and effort to invest in myself. I urge those of you suffering from gut issues or any other ailments to take pause and remember that life is full of flavor, and the best way to enjoy these tasty delights is by nourishing yourself and those around you.
