As we are still officially on school vacation and my exercise/research work/cooking routine is badly disturbed by having to provide full entertainment to my sons, I went with my sister, who happened to be visiting the UK for a holiday, to Center Parcs. I have written about Center Parcs before. It's a great family holiday destination, which brings you very close to nature with its location in the middle of a natural forest, where you get to see different species of animals wandering around freely. You see rabbits, squirrels, different types of birds and of course endless insects that are surprisingly friendly. They never bite. Looks like they are enjoying their time as well unlike the depressed mosquitoes in Saudi Arabia that vent their depression and anger by biting all living things without any exception.
I was taking a nice long walk and then I decided to check my twitter account to see what's going on. I saw a very offensive, aggressive and rude remark that insulted me and it also included some types of bullying against my two boys.
To be honest I am used to these types of remarks. I have a presence in YouTube through my show (Noon Alniswa) and I also appeared on MBC TV last Ramadan. Insults and abusive comments were nothing new to me, but at that moment when we were so close to a natural and peaceful environment with my children cycling and playing joyfully I regretted reading such a comment. I felt it was not the proper time and place to get offended with nasty comments and without a moment of hesitation I deleted the twitter app from my phone and decided not to check it for quite sometime. I was wondering how some people turn into bullies in the cyber world. What type of moral values, if any, do they have?
During my master's I did a small research about cyber-bullying and according to social researchers, youngsters, who bully on the cyber world are the weakest ones in real life. They are the ones defeated in fights in schools. So when their identities are disclosed, they take revenge and spread their venom through the cyber world. Sometimes they do this randomly without targeting a specific person. I believe when they realize that the person they pick as their victim has been affected by their action, they feel a great sense of achievement which they can hardly feel in real life.
Well, I am a grown up person and I can distinguish between constructive criticism and hate and offensive messages.
To be honest, offensive messages really make one feel bad. We are human beings, no matter how confidant and easygoing we are, harsh words do affect us even if we try to remain composed and do not show any reaction.
I think we should try to find a way to make social media free from offensive postings. Why do we have to ignore cyber-bullies and why can't we stop them?
OK, I sound really naive trying to control the social media with members close to the population of great China. Looks like I will just have to keep my hands on the block button.
