This week I thought of writing something different. OK, I admit I did not have anything else to write so I came up with this excuse and my editor was nice enough to accept my idea. I can imagine him frowning while going through my article.
But you know doing Ph.D. is not an easy job. For a person like me you hate to remain secluded it is even tougher. Anyway, let’s come to the point. After having lived in a different country for a while now, I came across people with different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. We all have our differences; we all have different worldviews and perspectives. But it is interesting that we all have so much in common as human beings. Our certain behaviors are so similar no matter what our color, our religion or our values are. I thought of sharing some of my observations with my readers. Hope you will like it.
We all share the belief that pressing the lift button twice will make it come faster, and yes, we all do it no matter how sophisticated we are, and in the UK, like most civilized countries, there are pedestrians crossings everywhere and the same rule applies to the buttons in the traffic light.
We always believe that we are never the cause of traffic jams; it’s always somebody else who is causing the gridlock.
If our phones ring when they should be on a silent mode, we all tend to shake it, not even a single brand of phones “as far as my limited knowledge stretch” will stop ringing when you shake it, still, we do it,
People from all cultures and backgrounds tend to jump from their seats in the plane immediately after it stops, sometimes even at the point when it hits the tarmac.
People always have strange preferences, most of the people on Earth prefer not to walk on the cross markings on ceramics and marble floors.
We tend never to pick the first item on a row even if all items are identical, for example in a cloths shop, I reckon that 90% of the shoppers will never pick the first pair of jean on top of a stack of identical and same sized trousers, I still cannot figure out the psychology behind this.
We all hate to wait at busy restaurants but we will think a lot before going into a less busy one even if it was recommended by Gordon Ramsey, but why is it empty? Scary.
We all are attracted by free food and drinks even if we deny it, but come on, even Bill Gates will enjoy a free cup of coffee.
Children in all cultures and languages tend to pick up swear words very easily leaving you wondering from where did they learn it. In all cultures, mothers-in-law are an object of jokes. We all tend to raise our tone if we are phoning someone abroad even if the line is clear. Most of us will blindly tap and press random buttons on the keyboard if something happened on our computers.
And the list goes on and on. Seriously, I am amazed how as humans we tend to have lots of similar reactions to stuff, and what amazes me the most is who told us to do that? Human nature has always fascinated me.
