In June as part of promoting the true spirit of Ramadan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) called for tolerance and coexistence.
“Tolerance is a key value of our ancestors and our founding fathers,” said Sheikh Mohammed. “The UAE has succeeded in spreading it throughout the Arab region and the world.”
The notion of tolerance is one of the most important concepts produced by the human mind. It is a founding concept that human nature is built upon, one that encourages association with others, to contribute, to build. If we are tolerant toward others, we are less aggressive and dispersed, instead brought together.
One of the most prominent philosophers on this subject, Voltaire said: “What is tolerance? It is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other’s folly — that is the first law of nature.”
By being tolerant and living peacefully side-by-side, not only do we make our lives better but in coming together we also make those around us live more fruitfully. Tolerance must be for everyone or it is for no one. No matter if it is about religion, or doctrine, or culture, no one deserves to be targeted due to their being different. Tolerance should be practiced in all walks of life, the personal and the public. It is important that there should be a community and an official will to achieve these demands. The call for tolerance must be legal and institutional, and be a fundamental approach, which governs the society and its members. It should be enforced in legal ways, across the whole institution of a country, built into its programs and projects.
The UAE has spread tolerance across the Arab world, and it is right that this national program is being rolled out. Targeting young people and steering them away from extremist ideologies that have marred so many lives, it will help teach them the difference between leaders who promote friendship and peace and those that only serve themselves, spreading hatred and calling for violence.
By creating a UAE Tolerance Centre, a Tolerance Responsibility Programme for Organization and a UAE Charter of Tolerance, Coexistence and Peace, the UAE has become an incubator of peace, helping promote it and spread it further instead of anger and violence.
To that end, former UN chief Kofi Annan said, “We need to promote greater tolerance and understanding among the peoples of the world. Nothing can be more dangerous to our efforts to build peace and development than a world divided along religious, ethnic or cultural lines. In each nation, and among all nations, we must work to promote unity based on our shared humanity.”
The UAE is a melting pot, bringing together people from all over the world, Christians, Muslims both Shiite and Sunni and others and it is from this bringing together of people for business that lasting peace and tolerance can spread to the whole world.
