A fire broke out in a leading food stuff warehouse at the ‘halaqa’ (vegetable market) yesterday morning and continued for several hours until a timely intervention by civil defense teams prevented it from spreading into adjacent warehouses in the area.
The blaze began in one warehouse containing huge quantities of food stuff items around 10 in the morning and continued until 5 p.m. Several civil defense teams worked to bring the fire under control.
The area was flooded with water that was used for putting out the fire at the warehouse. Several private water tankers were also used by the fire brigade.
No injuries have been reported so far, but businesses are believed to have incurred heavy financial losses.
A vast stretch of Umm Al-Qura Road was blocked by police to enable the fire brigade personnel to douse the fire.
