NAJRAN, 9 March 2003 — A Saudi was arrested here recently after he tried to cross the border with Yemen in a car allegedly laden with weapons and alcohol, according to Maj. Gen. Abdullah Al-Ghamdi, director of border guards in the Najran region. He said the man tried to escape arrest by opening fire at security officers. After crossing the border the alleged smuggler was hiding in residential and agricultural areas in Khabash and Hayera Al-Sulm districts in the region. The arrest came after Najran Governor Prince Mishaal ibn Saud ordered a massive search for the smuggler, who was wanted by security agencies for other crimes as well.
