Among all the news that is emanating from Syria, we have unfortunately given scant respect to a quiet movement to boycott Israeli products and companies that contribute to Israel’s military occupation of Palestine.
Ramzy Baroud’s article in this regard deserves appreciation for highlighting what the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement has been doing throughout the course of one week — launching the “biggest-ever campaign” aimed at boycotting Israeli products (“Toward meaningful solidarity with Palestine,” Nov. 28).
From Nov. 25 to Dec. 3, BDS carried out “99 actions” worldwide to highlight what it described as “companies’ complicity in Israel’s violations of international law and human rights abuses.”
This is important as we have seen the world, and the US in particular, failing to move even an inch toward bringing relief to beleaguered Palestinians tormented by the belligerent attitude of the Israeli government.
If major countries fail to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, making it the 21st century’s most glaring example of colonialism, then we know in which direction the world is moving. The situation in Syria, the mess in Iraq, North Korea’s bellicose policy, and ever-bleeding Kashmir are some of the indications that we are heading toward a chaotic world thanks to world leaders’ short-sightedness or complete lack of vision.
