Where does it end, this replacement of organs and can we one day expect to be morphed entirely, a full set of other people’s parts?

An Italian surgeon has planned the world’s first head operation and Dr. Sergio Canavero will wait for a donor who is healthy but without a chance to live. His patient is a Russian scientist called Valery Spiridonov who suffers from a rare genetic disease that just wastes muscle.

He wants his head to have a good body and is willing to take the risk. He will get head that ostensibly will still function as his but how can that be guaranteed?

He has nothing to lose so he is willing to take the chance.

I don’t know about the ethics of it but replacing the head is a bit bizarre. But then a hundred years ago who’d have had the heart to say change that. This is not cosmetic surgery we are talking but an actual replacement of nerves, blood vessels, spinal cord and gullet and throat and whatever.

The operation will involve 1500 medical experts and nurses and can take an open ended amount of time.

I am reading about this in the Mail and I am thinking yes, but a different head, how will you link the severed spinal cord and the doctor is saying I have a magic glue and the operation is within the realm of possibility.

It’s another ball game like whose memories, whose thoughts, whose brainpower, whose voice and ideas, the donor or the recipient.

After all, it does get a bit blurry. The head is also receiving a body transplant so does the body’s imperfections impact on the brain.

This is the stuff that you just cannot fathom. There will definitely be some groups who believe this is not acceptable like there are those who are against stem cell research. But if there is some part of the world where an incredible procedure is given the medical okay then who can stop the pioneering effort especially when the surgeon believes it gives hope to immobile patients.

They say these experiments have been done on monkeys and mice but with what results no one really knows.

The first thing you think of is some Mengel kind of medical nut job from the Nazi era making bizarre add ons in some underground laboratory but this surgeon seems confident that the time has come for the next step.

Talk about mix and match, this takes the cake. It is so out of kilter you cannot even bring yourself to pun on it, thought the puns are plentiful.
