Amid all the hustle and bustle of drafting and re-drafting my Ph.D. thesis, I somehow managed to release a brand new episode of my YouTube show.

I co-wrote the episode with my friend Maha NoorElahi. It focused on women rights. The show was primarily about how feminist and social activism particularly in women issues is being misused and badly exploited.

In the episode, we carefully tried not to side with any party and tried our best to come up with a balanced episode covering the issues of overdramatic and pragmatic female social activists, the issue of women rights being discussed and decided without even having women to consult and the issue of odd laws like the law that allow the son to be his mother’s guardian and have all the rights to withhold her passport and not allow her to travel, which contradicts the basic Islamic principles that encourage good behavior to mothers.

Despite all that, some angry viewers accused me of underestimating women issues and making fun of social activism. Well, to begin with, I was kind of satisfied with the debate started as a result of the episode. It is good for us to disagree without disrespected others. But to be honest, I was disappointed when I was accused of standing against women rights “like I have a moustache” and that I proved that a woman is the worst enemy of women.

Well, I will not defend myself, people who watch me, read me and follow me on social media know my opinions very well and they know that I tackle issues in my show but indirectly due to the light nature of my program.

In addition, I was never good in activism and I don’t agree with the radical methods in resolving issues and I prefer the soft method and that is what I try to do in my shows and in my writings. And yes, I disagree with the fake social activism that clearly seeks fame and building connections with influential people through the social media.

You see those accounts in social media spreading drama and trying to exploit very fair issues to achieve personal gains, and that is what I was clearly trying to criticize. I am very proud of genuine female social activists who are really serving female issues using very wise and logical methods.
