Lankan Muslims set shining example
This is in response to the story “Sri Lankan Muslims try to end halal meat row.” Muslim religious leaders’ effort to calm religious tensions in Sri Lanka is commendable.
Recently, hard-liners from the nation’s Buddhist majority have been calling for the abolition of the halal system of certifying foods and other goods. The protest against sale of halal meat comes at a time of mounting communal tension in the country. There have been several attacks on both mosques and Muslim-owned businesses, according to reports.
The Muslims in Sri Lanka have set a shining example to minority communities living amid sectarian threats in other parts of the world.
Their tolerant gesture can be emulated by ethnic groups who face majoritarianism.
Peaceful coexistence in multiethnic countries would go a long way in promoting global peace.
It is unfortunate the world community does not take meaningful action to stop the harassment of Muslim minorities in countries such as Sri Lanka and Myanmar.
