The visit of Prince Mohammed bin Salman, deputy crown prince and minister of defense, to France has led to positive and immediate results in the bilateral ties. It appears that Riyadh and Paris have both invested heavily this time in the strong relations, which in turn will translate into positive economic outcomes.
The Saudi delegation, headed by Prince Mohammed, and French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius signed 10 vital agreements worth about $12 billion.
These outcomes illustrate Saudi efforts to focus on developing strategic interests and forging partnerships with influential global powers. What is notable about these investments is that nearly $11 billion is in direct investments.
Prince Mohammed was accompanied by a business delegation that held talks with French business leaders during the Saudi-French Business Forum. He along with French President Francois Hollande oversaw the signing of key agreements, including pacts on energy, investment and trade, nuclear reactors and radioactive waste management.
The Kingdom has also signed multiple similar agreements with Russia, which also demonstrates the leadership’s interests in building strategic partnerships.
France is aligned with the Kingdom and has a positive record when it comes to having a stand on regional issues. The French say they coordinate closely with Riyadh, which they consider the central leader in the Arab world with wide political influence in the region.
These agreements are expected to yield high and immediate returns for both countries in the coming months, yet officials confirm it is just the first phase of many stages to come.
These policies and rapid progress will enhance economic growth in the Kingdom, especially as they are smart investments. Economists see this long-term economic vision as a means to benefit Saudi citizens.
It is clear that the Saudi-French ties are transcending traditional relations and becoming one based on strategic partnerships and interests. As such, this friendship will not only benefit both countries, but help in resolving outstanding issues in the region.
